When the railroad bypassed Mesilla in favor of Las Cruces back in 1881, it was the largest settlement between San Antonio and Tucson. Todays Mesilla is home to just over 2000 souls, retaining its old-world charm and Mexican flavor. The plaza, anchored by the beautiful San Albino Basilica, boasts the best shopping, drinking and dining in the area.
